VISUAL IDENTITY ART DIRECTION ALBUM DESIGN 2025 THE CONTEXTPlanet Nomi reimagines the artistic legacy of Klaus Nomi, the avant-garde performer whose career was cut short by the AIDS crisis. The goal of this project was to honor his futurist vision, surreal stage presence, and fusion of opera and new wave through an imaginary album design. THE OUTCOMEPlanet Nomi includes a conceptual album cover, vinyl packaging, promotional posters, and merchandise. The design draws on German Expressionism and the abyss of space, blending theatricality with interstellar isolation. Typography references German expressionist films, while the color palette remains true to Nomi’s distinctive aesthetic.
The work serves as a tribute to an artist whose vision was ahead of its time.
THE CONCEPTThe visual identity of Planet Nomi draws heavily from early German Expressionist cinema, specifically The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu. Their stark contrasts, theatrical shadows, and distorted sets echo the otherworldly and dramatic presence of Klaus Nomi himself.
The tracklist layout was inspired by the shape of the Lyra constellation, in which I envisioned Planet Nomi being located. The Lyra constellation is often depicted as a small harp, producing a divine sound. The arrangement of tracks follows this path as a nod to Nomi’s cosmic presence.
These references shaped the project’s typographic treatment, imagery, and layout decisions, creating a haunting yet glamorous atmosphere that honors Nomi’s theatrical legacy. GATEFOLD INTERIORBOOKLET SPREADS
